A drone video showing the poor condition of the Vashishti bridge in Chiplun, part of the Mumbai-Goa highway, has gone viral on social media, triggering public anger.
Shared by Instagram user Chirag Shailesh More, the video reveals large, crater-like potholes spread across the bridge. Heavy trucks are seen parked near the divider, making it harder for smaller vehicles to pass safely. The footage led users to compare the road to the surface of the moon, calling it dangerous and shameful.
The bridge, a key point along the popular Mumbai-Goa route, is heavily used by tourists and truckers.
Reactions poured in across platforms. One Instagram user wrote, “Using space technology. They have brought the moon here.” Another commented in Marathi, “It’s not that there are potholes on the road, the road itself is on potholes.”
Several users tagged Union Road and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari, urging him to take action. One post said, “Sir, this is the situation of the whole of Maharashtra. Please do something. They are fooling you in the name of deliverables.”
Another user wrote, “You better go and visit Gujarat and Karnataka again and again, and then travel from Mumbai to Goa by this highway. You’ll see the difference. This is getting pathetic with the same hope every year.”
Others raised questions about accountability, asking whether it lies with the ministry, IAS officers, or local authorities.
In response to the viral video, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) issued a clarification on X. It stated that the Vashishti bridge does not fall under its jurisdiction.
“NHAI would like to inform that the Mumbai-Goa National Highway in Chiplun near Vasishthi Bridge does not fall under NHAI’s jurisdiction and is maintained by the NH Division of PWD under the state government,” the post said.
