In a bizarre incident, an American Airlines flight carrying 193 passengers was diverted back to San Juan, Puerto Rico, after a passenger misrepresented a “RIP” text message they saw next to them, and assumed it was a threat to the flight.

According to a report by Peoplea passenger saw the person next to them receive a text message that read “RIP”, which is a common acronym for ‘Rest in Peace’, and assumed it was a threat to the flight, as per Puerto Rico’s Office of Explosives and Public Safety.

The passenger reportedly informed a stewardess about the message, who alerted the cockpit, leading to the rollout of emergency safety protocols.

“American Airlines flight 1847, with service from San Juan (SJU) to Dallas Fort Worth (DFW), returned to SJU shortly after departure due to a possible security concern,” said a spokesperson for American Airlines. The flight resumed its route and took off soon afterwards.

The flight landed safely in San Juan, after which law enforcement inspected and cleared the aircraft to re-depart. “Safety and security are our top priorities and we apologise to our customers for the inconvenience,” the airline said.

The passenger who received the ‘RIP’ message said a relative had died the day before, adding that they were on the flight after leaving their vacation early. “It was a mix-up that was handled in accordance with safety protocols. There was no real threat to the flight or its passengers,” said Nelman Nevarez, Aerostar’s director of operations.

Social media users called for action against the woman who made the complaint. “The passenger should be charged with making a false accusation. Peeper should pay cost of flight diversion and law enforcement response,” said a user.
