The question of whether AI would take over human jobs has been on everyone’s mind. AI has definitely made life simpler for many individuals but has often been blamed for reducing the need for qualified manpower in companies. Recently, Replit’s CEO, Amjad Masad, stated that learning to code is futile because AI will soon take over coding professions, insteads, people should focus on problem solving and creativity.
“I no longer think you should learn to code,” Amjad Masad wrote in his latest tweet on X. His company, Replit, allows users to build apps and websites using AI. Explaining why he thinks so, he mentioned how Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei predicted that within six months, AI could generate up to 90 per cent of codes. Amjad stated “In the upcae, like what Dario just said recently, all code will be AI generated. I assume that on this optimisation path we’re on, where agents are gonna get better and better and better, the answer would be different. The answer would be no. It would be a waste of time to learn how to code. But you could have different predictions, and I think different people will make different assumptions.”
He emphasised that people will need to continue to work on their basics, even if coding becomes outdated. He stated, “I would say kind of learn a bit of coding. I would say learn how to think, learn how to break down problems, right? Learn how to communicate clearly, as you would with humans, but also with machines.”
There were varied opinions on the CEO’s stance. Many thought that learning the basics should be the first step before delving deeper into the computer system. A user stated, “at least for me, learning to code is what’s allowing me to learn what you suggest.i know it’s for soundbites, but i think the real lesson is, don’t get caught up in syntax,” while another said, “Learning to code is the most effective way of figuring out how to break down problems. There is no alternative that gives you close to the same benefit as consistent, challenging coding work.”
This comes after Google CEO Sundar Pichai stated that AI generates 25% of the new code at the tech giant, which is then evaluated by engineers. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, who created ChatGPT, also stated that AI has already taken over half of coding work in several organisations.
