You may remember Backthe modest eatery in Delhi that shot to national fame after a heart-wrenching video went viral in 2021. The video showed an elderly Kanta Prasad tearfully requesting customers, and within days, his life transformed.
Donations and support poured in, enabling him to open a hotel. From pleading for help to donning sunglasses and meeting well-wishers, his rapid rise was widely covered across social media platforms like Instagram and YouTube.

However, the wave of viral fame did not last. The hotel soon closed due to unsustainable running costs, and Kanta Prasad returned to his original dhaba in Malviya Nagar. When Local18 visited, Prasad was found seated quietly, with dishes like Shahi Paneer, Dal makhani, Raita, Riceand Roti ready to serve, yet not a single customer in sight.
The dhaba appeared unkempt, and his wife lay resting nearby. Visibly disheartened, Prasad told us he no longer wishes to speak of the past as it only fuels his frustration.
A Dream That Faltered
Kanta Prasad shared that after going viral, tensions grew between him and the YouTuber who had brought him into the spotlight. This led to a breakdown in their relationship, prompting him to invest his own money into opening a hotel. But with monthly costs exceeding Rs 1 lakh and insufficient income, the venture was unsustainable. He ultimately shut the hotel and returned to his small roadside stall, where he now manages expenses with minimal resources.
He cooks the food himself, while his wife, Badaami, assists with basic prep. At over 80 years old, he still works daily, not out of necessity alone, but because he finds joy in it. He adds that no one helps him anymore; customers simply eat, pay, and go.
The aftermath of his fame brought further financial and emotional challenges. A flurry of YouTubers began visiting, often asking intrusive questions. The attention became so overwhelming that Prasad once considered ending his life. He persevered, however, and continues to run the dhaba. Though he now earns just enough to get by, the repeated visits from content creators continue to upset him.
