‘Relations with India changed as soon as Sheikh Hasina left power’, said Bangladesh Foreign Affairs Minister

Bangladesh’s Foreign Affairs Advisor Mohammad Tohid Hossain said on Saturday (30 November 2024) that the country’s relations with India have changed since former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was ousted from power in August. He gave this statement in a private university in Dhaka.

During this, Hussain said, “After August 5, relations with India have changed and this is the reality. Keeping this reality in mind, we have to build and continue our relationship with India. I am sure that India will Will understand how to take forward relations with Bangladesh in the changed circumstances.”

Sour relations with India

Relations between India and Bangladesh have been strained since a caretaker administration led by Nobel laureate Mohammad Yunus took power in August this year following student protests following Sheikh Hasina’s resignation. Hussain, in his address on Saturday, alleged that the previous government led by Hasina had tried its best to address India’s concerns.

Hussain said, “The previous government (of Bangladesh) tried its best to address India’s concerns. We also had some issues. The problems are happening because our issues were not resolved.” However, he did not give further details.

Hope to build good relations with India

Hossain expressed hope of establishing good relations with India and said that Bangladesh “does not want to harm anyone.” He said, “We will be optimistic that we can establish good relations so that the interests of both sides can be protected. We do not want to harm anyone. We also do not want anyone to harm us.”

He accused the Indian media of exaggerating India-Bangladesh relations and requested the Bangladesh media to report impartially on the matter.

India appealed for protection of minorities

Earlier, India on Friday (29 November 2024) had appealed to the interim government of Bangladesh to ensure the safety of Hindus and other minority communities, who are becoming victims of recent attacks. New Delhi had also said that the case against Bangladeshi saint Chinmoy Krishna Das, arrested on charges of treason, should be dealt with in a fair and transparent manner.
