Neeraj Chopra, the two-time Olympic medallist, tied the knot with Himani Mor, a former tennis player turned sports management graduate, last week. The couple’s intimate three-day wedding celebration took place in Himachal Pradesh from January 14 to 16. Interestingly, the pandit who officiated the couple’s wedding was reportedly unaware of the groom’s star status as a javelin thrower.
“I began a new chapter of my life with my family. Grateful for every blessing that brought us to this moment together. Bound by love, happily ever after,” Chopra wrote while sharing pictures on social media.
While the news of their marriage surprised many, Reddit users seemed to have caught wind of the relationship well in advance. A screenshot of a post from the platform reveals that a Redditor hinted at the possibility of Himani Mor marrying Neeraj Chopra months before the official announcement.
“There was a rumour in the sports people’s network here in Haryana that Himani Mor would marry Neeraj Chopra. Did anyone else hear about it?” wrote the Reddit user on the platform’s Tennis community.
When another user asked for more details about Himani Mor, the original poster replied, “She is the daughter of Meena Mor, who is a tennis coach and is relatively popular in the sports community in Haryana. Himani herself was a national/international level tennis player and lives and trains in the US now. But this is just a rumour I heard at my tennis club.”
For those unaware, 25-year-old is an alumna of Delhi University’s Miranda House, where she earned her bachelor’s degree in Political Science and Physical Education. She also has a brother, Himanshu, who is a tennis player.
“Both Neeraj and Himani are athletes. They knew each other. They had met each other in the US. Neeraj knew best who he wanted to spend his life with. He then took permission from the family, and once that was all sorted, he decided to get married to Himani,” his uncle Surendra Chopra told Aaj Tak.
He added, “It is a love plus arranged marriage. Neeraj and Himani took permission from their parents, and then they went ahead with it.”
His uncle further shared that the family didn’t take any dowry. They accepted Rs 1 as part of ‘shagun’.
