Broken engagements lead to disputes, bad blood and even brawls. But in this one incident, it led to a young man being parted with his moustache. The incident, which has gone viral, has been reported from Karauli district in Rajasthan, where the bride-to-be’s family chopped off the moustache of the groom’s brother after the latter’s family called off the engagement. The incident unfolded in full public view as the crowd watched on.
The dispute reportedly arose when the groom’s family broke off the engagement after his sister disapproved of the bride-to-be. Enraged by their decision, the bride’s family held the brother of the groom and shaved off his moustache as people watched on. Some even filmed the incident and uploaded the video on social media.
The video, which went viral, shows the spectators seated around, discussing the broken engagement while the groom’s brother is made to lose his moustache.
As the video of the incident went viral, the groom uploaded another video in which he presented his side of the story. Asserting that his family was not at fault for breaking off the engagement, he said the bride-to-be shown to him in the photograph and the one he was actually expected to marry were two different women. He says that when his family came to know of this “deception”, they told the bride’s family that they need more time to decide on the engagement.
Breaking down, he says his family has been “deeply wronged”. He claims that his family neither broke off the engagement nor formally agreed to it. “An attempt was made to put us under unnecessary pressure. We were publicly humiliated,” he said.
The man, who remains unidentified, has also sought protection from the police. He alleged that pressure is being exerted on him to reach a compromise by accepting monetary compensation.
Nadauti police station in-charge Mahendra Kumar said no formal complaint has been received from either party yet. The police are currently monitoring the situation.
