“A Guy committing a Crime is a Crime. But a Girl committing a Crime is a Social Commentary on all the girls everywhere and everyone gets the right to sermon them,” a user, responding to a flurry of posts attacking “modern day” women wrote. The modern-day woman in this case refers to Sonam Raghuvanshi who has been accused of meticulously planning the murder of her husband Raja Raghuvanshi. The newlywed couple embarked upon a cosy honeymoon stay in Meghalaya after tying the knot on May 11. Concerns grew when the two went missing on May 23. Raja’s decomposed body was discovered after an extensive search in the surrounding area as he was found in a gorge near Weisawdong Falls. He had been murdered, the signs on his body indicated. Sonam was nowhere to be seen.

Then, in a turn of events, Sonam was arrested. It has also been alleged that Sonam and her lover Raj Kushwaha had planned Raja Raghuvanshi’s murder while three other accused men had executed the plan.

The nature of the case became a hotly discussed topic on social media. From bashing arranged marriages to denouncing “new age girls”, a lot has unfolded online in the past 48 hours or more.

Modern Women = Evil

The argument that women who were “given” freedom set out to commit crimes became the base of social media chatter around the murder of Raja Raghuvanshi. The subsequent posts highlighted the scenario wherein the woman who wasn’t independent fit society’s mould of a perfect woman, the adarsh bahuwho wasn’t capable of such grotesque crimes in a million years.

‘Patriarchal, Misogynist’

The myopic, hateful, and deeply sexist comments made against women were quickly countered and condemned by users of ‘X’ who urged others not to make sweeping statements and turn the tragedy of Raja’s cut-short life into a hate campaign against a gender.

“One woman kills her husband and suddenly all women should be locked inside homes? But when thousands of women face dowry deaths, acid attacks, and rapes you go silent?” a user clapped back to a user who shared photograph of Raja and Sonam from their wedding day along with a caption that read: “When women became free, they realised why society kept them in their homes.”

“No sane woman will justify what she did. A crime is a crime — gender doesn’t make it right. But using this to bash all women & “glorify patriarchy” is disgusting. Stop turning tragedies into gender wars. Show empathy to the family who lost their son,” another chimed in.

“A woman killed her innocent husband — tragic, yes. But using one incident to justify centuries of locking women away? Absurd.”

“The first thing a man does when a woman does something vile is try to justify generations of abuse and opression, (sic).”

The outrage wasn’t just limited to bashing women but also kickstarted a conversation around the institution of arranged marriages in India.

Arranged Marriage

The revelation that Sonam had allegedly devised a plan with her lover to end Raja’s life instead of saying no to the arranged marriage did not sit well with the public.

“Don’t understand the psychology of people, the same people who don’t have the guts to say no to a marriage arranged by their parents, have the guts to arrange a hitman and get such a daring act executed. Like how?” commented an ‘X’ user.

“High time that Indian parents stop forcing their children for arranged marriage, (sic)” another user added.

“Arranged marriages are risky than love marriages. You’re literally betting your whole life and happiness on someone you barely know. A pure gamble! (sic).
