
Punjab Police’s Ropar Range DIG Harcharan Singh Bhullar has been arrested red-handed by the CBI while taking a bribe of Rs 5 lakh. This bribe was allegedly being taken from a scrap dealer of Mandi Gobindgarh. As soon as the news of the arrest came, there was panic in the police department and administration.
This case not only became a cause of embarrassment for the Punjab Police, but also tarnished the image of the officer, who was once known for honesty and strictness. Now Harcharan Singh Bhullar’s name is in the news in the bribery case, but once he was known as a “duty first” officer like his father.
Who is Harcharan Singh Bhullar?
The name of Harcharan Singh Bhullar was known as a strict and hardworking officer in Punjab Police. He had reached this position not due to any political or family influence, but through his own hard work. He started his career with SPS (State Police Service). On the basis of hard work and ability, Bhullar got promotion in IPS cadre.
This was the period when drugs and crime were increasing rapidly in Punjab, and the state needed officers who could work without pressure. Bhullar has proved many times through his work that he does not shy away from taking tough decisions.
Bhullar is associated with the legacy of police
Bhullar’s relationship with the police is not only professional but also familial. His father Major Mehal Singh Bhullar himself has been DGP of Punjab Police. Mehal Singh was counted among the bravest IPS officers of the 1980-90s.
He had led many major operations during the period of terrorism in Punjab. Apart from this, he had been a Major in the Indian Army and had taken part in operations like China War, India-Pakistan War of 1965 and Mizoram Operation. The same bravery and discipline of his father inspired Harcharan to join the police.
Journey from SPS to IPS
Harcharan Singh Bhullar’s journey was not easy. He started his career with the State Police Service and worked as SSP in many districts. Which includes Sangrur, Barnala, Fatehgarh Sahib, Hoshiarpur, Khanna, Jagron, Gurdaspur and Mohali. As Mohali SSP, he had performed well in crime control and anti-drug campaigns. The result of his hard work was that he was given the rank of DIG in 2023 and was given the responsibility of Ropar range in November 2024.
