A woman from Pune has triggered a wave of disgust, disbelief and backlash online after she posted a video claiming that she washes her eyes every morning with her own urine.

Nupur Pittie, who calls herself a “medicine-free life coach,” shared the clip on Instagram earlier this week with the caption: “Urine Eye Wash — Nature’s Own Medicine.”

In the video, Pittie explains that she uses fresh, midstream morning urine to rinse her eyes, claiming it helps relieve dryness, irritation, and redness. She frames the practice as part of her larger belief in natural and alternative healing.

The post, uploaded on Tuesday, clocked over 1.5 lakh views within 24 hours and drew widespread criticism. Viewers flooded the comments with disbelief, disgust, and calls for medical intervention.

While Pittie stands by her method, medical professionals and users online have warned against such practices, flagging the risk of infection and serious harm.

Award-winning, renowned hepatologist, Dr Cyriac Abby Philips known over the internet as “TheLiverDoc” shared the video on X. “Please don’t put your urine inside your eyes. Urine is not sterile,” he said.

He sharply criticised the trend and said it was “depressing and terrifying”.

Users on X agreed with his criticism. Philips also headed over the woman’s Instagram offering a piece of advice. “You need help woman. This is not normal. If you are trying to ride the social media ‘following and like wave’, this is not the way. Get help,” he said.

Human urine is a waste product made up of about 95% water, with the rest composed of urea, creatinine, ammonia, salts and various metabolic byproducts the body expels. It may also contain traces of medications, hormones and environmental toxins filtered from the bloodstream. The eye’s mucous membranes are particularly vulnerable and introducing waste substances, like urine, can disrupt the natural pH and protective barriers.
