The Cluster Innovation Center (CIC) of Delhi University (DU) has proposed to remove Muslim reservation in the Master of Science (MSc) in Mathematics Education programme. This course is offered under the Meta University concept in collaboration with DU and Jamia Millia Islamia. This step will be discussed soon in the governing body of CIC.
According to The Indian Express, this proposal will be placed in the meeting of the Governing Body of CIC where its future will be decided. The MSc program was started in 2013 and is a symbol of collaboration between DU and Jamia. At present, the Common University Entrance Test for Postgraduate (CUET-PG) is conducted for admission to this course, and there is a provision of reservation for Muslim candidates. Out of total 30 seats, 12 seats are for Unreserved Category, 6 for OBC (Non-Creamy Layer), 4 for Muslim General, 3 for EWS, 2 for Scheduled Castes and the remaining for Scheduled Tribes, Muslim OBC and Muslim Women. A senior DU official said that as per the policies of the university, there should be no reservation on the basis of religion. He said that when it comes to caste based reservation, we talk about reservation for the deprived sections but there should not be reservation on the basis of religion. Over the past few years, the admission process for MSc programs has become completely computerized. In which all the students are given admission through DU instead of Jamia.
Proposal with the Governing Body
A CIC official said that now this issue is being raised. That is, since students are getting admission in DU, then naturally they should follow the reservation policy of DU. Which is applicable only in DU. The proposal is currently with the Governing Body and once a decision is taken, it will be presented to the Vice Chancellor. The concept reflects a paradigm shift for higher education in India. It is managed by the CIC and despite its inter-university nature, the CIC believes that DU policies should be given priority. At the time of starting this course, it was decided that 50% of the students would get admission in DU and the remaining 50% in Jamia. However, currently the model of seat allotment for this program is decided by DU.
