Prince William was left surprised by a question from one of the tenants during his visit to the Duchy of Cornwall estate. Rather than giving a serious response, the royal skilfully deflected the inquiry with a light-hearted joke, sharing a laugh and keeping the atmosphere friendly and relaxed.

According to The Telegraph, the 42-year-old Prince of Wales was carrying out his regular monthly visit to the estate, where he met with farmers, local community members, staff, and tenants. During his tour, one of the tenants asked whether the prince might contemplate making the rental properties on Duchy land completely free of charge. The request caught the prince off guard.

As per the outlet, Prince William responded to the question with a laugh, noting that it wasn’t the first time he’d been asked something like that. The query came from retiree Gerald Addicott, and the prince reportedly admitted others had raised the same issue before. He added that he had even explored the idea with his financial team, only to be met with “a lot of sweaty faces” once the numbers were crunched.

Prince William took over the Duchy of Cornwall following King Charles’s accession to the throne in 2022. The vast estate covers more than 20 counties across England and Wales and serves as a major source of income for the heir to the throne. It’s reported that the prince makes visits to the estate every four to six weeks as part of his ongoing duties.

Prince William told The Telegraph that he views the Duchy of Cornwall as part of the charitable work he and Kate Middleton do through their Royal Foundation. “I see the Duchy as an extension of the work we do with the Royal Foundation. I see it as a branch of my philanthropy,” he said.

He explained that he sees the Duchy as a way to give back, especially to rural communities, and hopes to use it as a force for good in line with his broader philanthropic goals. “There’s so much good we can do in the rural world. I see it (the Duchy) as another arm to the work that I want to do, which is being a positive force for good,” he stated.
