An unholy incident has emerged in Brazil following reports that a Roman Catholic priest was found at the parish residence of Our Lady of Aparecida, shirtless, hiding a fiance of one of his parishioners under a bathroom sink. This week’s incident has sparked indignation, incredulity and demands for church sanctions.
A group of irate men confronted the Rev. Luciano Braga Simplicio inside the parish residence of Our Lady of Aparecida Parish shortly after the furious soon-to-be groom unleashed an intense tirade. The incident took place on October 13 in the state of Mato Grosso, approximately 300 miles east of the Bolivian border, the New York Post reported.
The Discovery: ‘Hiding Under the Sink’
The incident reportedly began when a group of angry men who were related to the fiance smashed down the door of the parish home’s bathroom and discovered the woman curled up underneath the washbasin.
After being pulled from her hiding place, the woman appeared stunned and unable to speak. The unidentified woman was seen sobbing on the floor while wearing only shorts and a tank top after being dragged out of the vanity.
The priest, wearing only gym shorts, made multiple attempts to exit the room but was resisted and told to open a door that the crowd thought the missing fiance was behind.
According to local blog Pelo Bem de Sao Jose, Simplicio had allegedly sneaked the 21-year-old woman to his house next to the church early in the morning while her fiance was out of town.
Although it is unknown exactly how long she had been there or under what pretext, the evidence points to a timing that extended beyond a quick trip.
Rev. Simplicio reportedly defended himself by claiming that he only gave the woman access to the bathroom so she could ‘take a shower’ —a good gesture, he claimed, with no underlying motive.
The priest and the woman both denied ever having sexual relations. The woman filed a police complaint, noting that the now-viral footage was inappropriately distributed following the event.
Outcry, Investigation and Church Response
The local diocese has not yet issued an official statement. However, under canon law, such accusations usually result in an internal investigation, a ministry suspension, or even expulsion while the matter is being verified.
The Diocese of Diamantino, which is in charge of Simplicio and Our Lady of Aparecid, launched an internal investigation into the priest’s alleged behaviour.
The investigation will reportedly ascertain whether Simplicio violated the 1983 Code of Canon Law, which forbids Latin church priests from having sexual or affective relationships.
