ChatGPT’s Studio Ghibli trend has taken the internet by storm, with people from all walks of life – from celebrities to politicians – sharing their hand-drawn animation style pictures on social media. Indian politicians have also hopped on the bandwagon, sharing their animated avatars.
The latest image-generator update in ChatGPT has allowed users to create almost any image of their choice in the distinct style of Studio Ghibli. Prime Minister Narendra Modi was the first the join the trend, as the central government shared a series of his AI-generated pictures that include iconic moments with world leaders and activities.
The official social media handle of My Gov India shared the pictures of the PM holding the national flag, his meetings with US President Donald Trump and French President Emmanuel Macron. “Main character? No. He’s the whole storyline. Swipe through New India in Studio Ghibli strokes,” the caption read.
PM Modi was also seen in an army uniform, delivering a speech, offering prayers at the Ayodhya Ram Mandir, flagging off the Vande Bharat train, and even on his recent visit to Anant Ambani’s Vantara, playing with the animals.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) later shared a picture of Union Home Minister Amit Shah speaking in the Parliament. “PoK is ours and we will take it…,” it captioned the photo.
Veteran Congress leader Shashi Tharoor also said he had been “assimilated into the Ghibli trend”, sharing AI-generated artwork sent by his supporters and well-wishers. “Didn’t even know what Ghibli was till now, but consider me officially Spirited Away by this newfound revelation!” he said.

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar also uploaded a picture of his mother. “Aai and Me decided that Ghibli is one trend worth a shot! Have to say, it is super cool!” he said.

What Is Ghibli?
OpenAI’s GPT-4o model has introduced an in-built Studio Ghibli image generation feature that lets users give an anime makeover to any picture, from iconic movie scenes to tragedies to childhood photos to proposals. This Ghibli feature has become an overnight sensation among users.
According to ChatGPT, Studio Ghibli is a “renowned Japanese animation studio, famous for creating beautifully crafted, imaginative, and emotionally resonant films. It was founded in 1985 by Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata, two influential directors in the world of animation.”
Amid the unexpected success of the update, CEO Sam Altman has revealed how ChatGPT’s GPUs have been “melting” due to the heavy demand, thus leading to “rate limits.” Studio Ghibli co-founder Hayao Miyazaki, who has been quite critical of the AI image trend, is yet to share his latest reaction to the viral pictures.
