Luigi Mangione, a 26-year-old male suspect in the shooting death of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, is now the focus and subject of a high-profile investigation. After he got arrested in Altoona, Pennsylvania on December 9, Mangione was charged with second-degree murder and other different weapon offences. Thompson was fatally outside the Hilton hotel in Midtown Manhattan on the night of December 4, precisely after preparing to attend an investor conference.

Hindustan Times noted that the man in question belongs to a privileged background in Maryland in the real estate and health care business. His grandfather founded several successful companies including Turf Valley Resort and Lorien Health Services implying that the connections to medical enterprises have been there for quite some time. He attended a high-profile prep school in Baltimore. Graduating valedictorian in 2016, Mangione earned both his undergraduate and graduate degrees in computer science at the University of Pennsylvania.

Although Mangione comes from an educated family, most of his friends and people who knew him in person attribute him to anti-capitalist views. People close to him have denied that he could be involved in any violent crime as they recalled him as a bright and friendly man, as cited ABC News.

Mangione was found in possession of a ghost gun—a model of firearm easily assembled from parts in the absence of a serial number. Additionally, he was equipped with a suppressor and several counterfeit identification cards, including a fraudulent New Jersey identification matching the one used to check into a New York City hostel before the shooting, the BBC reports. Authorities also found a three-page handwritten manifesto detailing his grievances with corporate America, which he may have used as motivation for possibly carrying out the attack, they said.

Upon arrest, Mangione was visibly nervous when asked by police and attempted to give them phoney identification. Eventually, he was charged with firearms offences and forgery and was held without bail. CBS News said his extradition to New York is pending and awaits more legal proceedings.

Investigators continue to piece together Mangione’s movements leading up to the shooting. After leaving New York City immediately after the incident, he moved through various locations in Pennsylvania before being captured, CBS News added. The NYPD is working hard to understand whether Mangione acted alone or if others were involved in planning the attack.

As the police probe continues on this case, they are also looking into Mangione’s online presence as well as any affiliations he had with any large-scale anti-corporate movements or ideas. Police are still carrying out their probe to ascertain the cause of this heinous act on an affluent personality from the medical profession.

Meanwhile, the surveillance camera captured a masked gunman approaching Thompson from behind and firing multiple shots until his death. The police launched a massive manhunt lasting five days before Mangione was apprehended, after being recognised by a McDonald’s employee in Pennsylvania, BBC added.
