A group of tourists is facing backlash for their “lack of basic civic sense” after a shocking photo went viral on social media. Originally shared on Reddit, the image captures a pristine, snow-covered landscape tarnished by “gutka stains, empty plastic bottles, Navrattan mixture packets, and snack wrappers” littered across the area.
Despite being located 9,000 feet above sea level and visited by only around 100 tourists, the site was left in a deplorable state. However, News18 could not independently verify the location or the authenticity of the post.
The Redditor, dismayed by the scene, noted that while only “100 tourists” had been there, the amount of litter was alarming and embarrassing. The post quickly gained traction, sparking widespread discussion on social media.
Frustrated users voiced their disappointment over the careless behaviour, with many demanding stricter regulations and greater accountability from tourists. The viral photo has reignited debates on responsible travel and civic responsibility.
“At 9,000 feet above sea level, there are hardly 100 tourists, yet there is gutka & litter in the snow,” the Reddit post read. It further questioned, “What’s stopping Indian tourists from picking up their own trash?”
However, the post does not confirm whether Indian tourists were responsible for the littering. Nevertheless, it has triggered widespread outrage.
Take a look:
Shared on March 22, the post has garnered over 2,200 upvotes so far. It has also sparked intense discussions, with many users condemning the blatant disregard for the environment.
A user said, “We can’t go anywhere without ruining the place. This is shameful.”
Another sarcastically commented, “I saw the same thing on the Tungnath Trail recently. Liquor bottles, Gutka packets and orange spits on white snow. Such people really need strict treatment.”
“It’s frustrating to see such disregard for nature. People need to realize their impact on these beautiful places,” an individual wrote.
“What’s funny is that these same people will behave when abroad because they know they will have to face consequences for this kinda stuff,” another user stated on Reddit.
In India, responsible tourism is crucial to ensuring that the nation’s stunning natural scenery and rich cultural legacy are enjoyed by succeeding generations.
