People in Mumbai are often known for their caring nature and a recent video from a local train has captured hearts. A group of friends came together to celebrate the retirement of a fellow commuter from their daily train rides. They organised a simple celebration with a small banner that said “Happy Retirement.” Although the decoration was simple, it showed how local trains in the City of Dreams are more than just transportation. Many in the comments mentioned that Mumbai’s local trains hold a special place in people’s lives.
According to the clip, it looks like the celebration has already happened as the train compartment looks empty. Still, the simple setup and sweet gesture stood out. An X user came across the site and decided to record it. The individual wrote, “Only in Mumbai will you find train friends celebrating the retirement of a fellow commuter. Train friends is a breed exclusive to Mumbai local train travellers.”

Reacting to the post, a user said, “Mumbai’s local train is more than just a mode of transport, it’s an emotion. A day before all major festivals, commuters come together & celebrate by decorating compartments, it’s only in Mumbai where you will find a Train Friends group in our WhatsApp.”
Another shared, “The person probably spent more time in the local than with their family.”
“Same in Kolkata suburban local trains too. Birthday, marriage, retirement are celebrated among groups of co-passengers. I have even seen puja being performed. happiness, joy celebrated, sadness shared. Local train is an emotion. These are nothing new, ongoing for many decades,” a comment read.
An individual stated, “Had a group of elderly people I travelled with daily, during my engineering days, from Kalyan to Vidyavihar. With time, everyone was like a friend. Whenever I had to carry my drafter to the college, they used to pass it to me from the window so that I wouldn’t risk breaking it.”
Another mentioned, “Mumbai makes you enjoy small things.”
One more added, “Train friendships are everything. It’s humbling.”
A few years back, a farewell took place at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT), where passengers and railway staff gathered to celebrate the retirement of a train motorman. He had worked with the Central Railway for many years. In the video, people could be seen dancing, recording and cheering for the motorman.
Since the video was posted online, people started thanking the motorman for his service.
