The iconic Ripley Castle, which has remained with the Ingilby family for generations, is up for sale for the first time in 700 years. Located in North Yorkshire, the castle can now be purchased for a whopping £21 million (approximately Rs 225 Crore). The property includes a castle, a hotel, cricket fields, shooting grounds, a store, a coffee shop and more than 445 acres of gardens. Although the current owners, Sir Thomas and Lady Ingilby, feel privileged to care for the estate, they are ready to enjoy a well-deserved retirement and explore new opportunities.
Speaking with BBC, Sir Thomas said, “There are days when we are very positive about it, and there are other days when we are sad about what we will miss. I’ve been looking after the place for over 50 years, so this has been my whole life. I don’t want to be carried out of here feet first, I’ve got things I want to do.”
Sir Thomas took over the estate when he was just 18 years old. When he married Emma in 1984, they made a plan to improve the castle, including major repairs like replacing the roof. Over the years, they worked hard to maintain the property as a business while preserving its history. Now, as they prepare for retirement, Lady Ingilby feels satisfied that they “ticked every box on that list. We’ve left it in the best state possible and safeguarded the heritage for future generations. Someone else can have the experience, because it has been a privilege, such a privilege, to be able to live here.”
Lady Ingilby hopes the new owner will respect the rich history of the castle, as the family’s story is closely connected to England’s past. Sir Thomas added that the new owner should not feel the pressure of maintaining it for 700 years like his family did.
Mark Granger from the Estate Agents Carter Jonas added, “With 445 acres of land, it offers tremendous opportunities for buyers interested in commercial, agricultural, sporting, or conservation ventures. There are countless possibilities to transform it further into a remarkable family home and business that can be cherished for generations.”
The sale is split into nine separate lots, which can be bought together or individually.
