In two forest reserves in Seberang Perai, Penang, the Nature Sustainable Ecosystem Society (Nest) has recorded more than 100 bird species.

Monitoring efforts in two forest reserves in Seberang Perai, Penang, Malaysia have led to the discovery of over 100 bird species, according to The Sun. The findings were documented by the Nature Sustainable Ecosystem Society (Nest) as part of its ongoing efforts to support biodiversity conservation.
Nest’s fieldwork coordinator, Shaiful Azhar Abu Bakar, explained that the research is part of the “Forest Bird Species Checklist Survey in Seberang Perai”, an initiative aimed at updating bird species data to help guide conservation efforts. He highlighted the importance of biodiversity in maintaining ecological balance and enhancing human well-being.
The project is funded by Think City, a subsidiary of Khazanah Nasional Berhad, through a research grant. The funding will be used to develop a comprehensive checklist report on forest bird species, which will serve as a resource for research, policy-making, development planning, and ecotourism projects.
The survey began at the Air Hitam Dalam Forest Reserve, where around 60 bird species have been identified so far. Meanwhile, the Bukit Mertajam Forest Eco Park has recorded 40 species. The next phase of the study will take place at Bukit Panchor State Park in Nibong Tebal.
During observations at Air Hitam Dalam Forest Reserve, researchers spotted flocks of young birds, including the Black Kite, indicating increased breeding activity in the area. Shaiful expressed optimism that more bird species will be identified as the survey progresses.
A team of ten bird enthusiasts, including experts from local universities, seasoned birdwatchers, and photographers, are collaborating on this research. Shaiful stressed that the data collected is vital for ensuring the long-term survival of forest reserves, as it helps create an environment where bird populations can thrive and return year after year.
The initiative, according to project organiser Dr. Siti Norasikin Ismail, is in line with the Seberang Perai empowerment project and intends to submit a checklist report to the Seberang Perai Municipal Council (MBSP) and Think City.
The team intends to create digital content with forest bird species, brochures, and short films as printed materials to further engage the public. Maintaining and updating bird data is crucial, according to Siti Norasikin, since it greatly aids in the growth of ecotourism and is a useful tool for researchers and nature lovers.
Through seminars and conversations centred on natural heritage, including bird conservation and habitat protection, the survey’s results will also be disseminated to the local community. Species identification, data-sharing strategies, birdwatching, and bird photography skills will all be covered for participants.
