From flight cancellations, to excruciatingly long delays, and poor customer service to bad-quality meals, it’s not been the best of weeks of the Indian aviation sector. Now, a new issue seems to have cropped up. It relates to baggage weighing scales at the airport.

A passenger flying from Chandigarh to Delhi via IndiGo reported a discrepancy at the check-in counter. Weighing his luggage, the man found the scales displayed two different readings for the same suitcase. The situation led to questions about the equipment’s reliability.

The traveller brought attention to the glitch by posting a video on Instagram. When he placed his suitcase on one weighing scale, the reading was 14.5 kg. However, when he moved the bag to another scale, it registered 12.2 kg.

Expressing his disappointment, the passenger said, “As a frequent traveller, I just lose faith in the system, and the machinery at the airport. This is an important factor because there have been times when I paid extra for the extra luggage I have been carrying.”

The caption detailed the concerning incident. A part of it read, “2.3 KGs difference. Can these machines be easily manipulated? I hope this is a rare case and a technical glitch. I generally felt that my bag wasn’t as heavy as it showed, so the lady at the counter asked me to check it on the other belt. And to my surprise, it showed a different number… I hope this is taken up very seriously.”

In response to the video, IndiGo revealed that weighing machines were certified and calibrated by the airport authorities at “regular intervals”. They assured the passenger that his feedback would be reviewed by an expert team.

A user commented, “You saw something wrong with the machine and your complaint was towards the Airport. You handled it very well.” Another lauded the passenger for standing “up for what is right”. A person pointed out that weighing scales must be “taken care of by BHS suppliers as well as airport operators.” “Airports have been scamming us clearly” shared a disgruntled individual. Many revealed facing similar baggage problems.

So far, the video has crossed 2.5 million views.
