A Dubai-based woman had an uncomfortable experience in a taxi where the driver asked inappropriate questions about her personal life. She was not in a cab from Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) or Careem, but a random local one from Deira. In a video she secretly recorded, the driver asked if she had a boyfriend. When she said yes, he asked if they got intimate every day.
When she said no, he was in disbelief. The driver continued to make more personal and uncomfortable inquiries. Even though she tried to change the subject, the driver still told her that she should have s** that night.
After social media users told her to use a legal taxi and blamed her for not ending the conversation, she explained that she wasn’t doing it willingly but only responded out of “politeness.” She also mentioned that she was dressed properly, but the driver chose to talk that way.
In the comments section, the woman wrote, “A few days ago, I got into a higher taxi (not an RTA taxi) where the driver started talking about inappropriate topics like s** and relationships. Despite me trying to change the conversation, he wouldn’t stop. I engaged, but only out of politeness, not wholeheartedly.
“I was wearing an Abaya, dressed appropriately, yet he chose to have that conversation. This isn’t the only time something like this has happened. I’ve also had sellers in the market try to brush their hands over my chest area to give me something.”
“These things happen and just because they aren’t often talked about doesn’t mean they don’t exist. It’s clear that many others experience it and unfortunately, it’s mostly people of African descent. This is just me speaking up, and I don’t think it should be a problem. The taxi driver was Pakistani. Just to clarify, that’s not how I speak. You can clearly tell I was tired, dragging my speech and exhausted. I had just finished a stressful day of shopping and really just wanted to get home,” she added.
Reacting to the post, a user wrote, “Engaging in this type of conversation is loose.”
Another shared, “Why are you entering illegal taxis? This is why police made it illegal, and you people still ride in them, please avoid using it and use the ones which are legal.”
“Did you get his vehicle details straight to the police? He’ll get fined heavily and arrested,” a comment read.
An individual shared, “I had a similar situation 4 years ago in an official taxi even – these people need to be reported immediately.”
One more added, “What I do is that when they try to start a conversation after hello how are you madam? I will just pretend not to be listening, because these people don’t understand the meaning of privacy you can imagine.”
Since the video was shared on Instagram, it has garnered over four lakh views.
