Delhiites experienced a chaotic Friday morning as heavy monsoon rains and fierce winds descended upon the city overnight. The downpour resulted in widespread disruptions, including fallen trees obstructing roadways, significant waterlogging causing traffic snarls, and leaving commuters like one office-goer stranded for hours.
Sharing his ordeal while he was stuck at Deen Dayal Upadhyay Marg, Mukesh told news agency ANI, “I am heading to my office in Laxmi Nagar. The rain has brought such relief from the heat. But now I am late for work. I have been stuck here since 5 am… There was a traffic snarl as well as an accident here just now. There is no waterlogging here but at the Connaught Place flyover.”
Another commuter told ANI, “This rainfall will bring respite from heat. It is a bit cold now… There is waterlogging at the underpass. Bikes and autos are breaking down there. We have returned from there.”
As of 7 am, weather agency IMD issued a red alert for Delhi while much of the surrounding National Capital Region (NCR) remained under orange and yellow alerts. “Intense rainfall, lightning, and gusty winds of 40 to 90 km/hr are likely to continue,” the IMD said.
Issuing an advisory, the IMD said that the weather could cause broken tree branches, uprooted trees, damage to crops and plantations, power outages, and communication disruptions as well possible structural damage to weaker buildings. Urging residents to remain indoors, the weather agency said, “Citizens should remain alert and be prepared to move to safer locations if conditions worsen.”
