Delhi Schools Admissions: If your child is going to enroll in the first grade in the next few years, then this news is very important for you. The Delhi government has made an important change under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, and it has been decided that now all the schools of the capital will get admission in the first grade, whose age will be at least six years. This change will be implemented from the academic session 2026-27 and its objective is to impart strong basic education to children in advance. This new rule will have to be followed by government, aided and private schools.
According to Dainik Jagran’s report, till now most of the schools in Delhi had only two classes nursery and KG (or UKG) and children used to get admission in the first grade at the age of about five years. But now under the new system, three-level pre-primary education has been made mandatory.
Nursery (at the age of 3)
Lower KG (at the age of 4)
Upper KG (UKG) (at the age of 5)
Only after this, the child will get admission in the first grade and by then his age should be completed six years.
What is the thinking behind change?
This decision of the Delhi government has been taken in accordance with the National Curriculum Infrastructure (NCF-FS), in which the age of 3 to 8 years is considered a “foundational stage”. In this stage, it has been said to provide sports, activity and search based education to children, so that interest and understanding about studies can be developed from the initial stages.
Director of Education Director Vedita Reddy said that before this change, the government will also seek suggestions from all the concerned parties. Teachers, guardians, school management committees and common people can send their suggestions to the schoolbranchnep@gmail.com by 10 July 2025.

Schools will have to prepare
To implement this change, schools will need new infrastructure. According to experts, it is necessary to amend the Delhi School Education Act, 1973 for this, because it has a provision of minimum age of five years. Along with this, schools will also have to arrange trained teachers and additional classes, so that the study of foundational stage can be implemented better.
