A Reddit user has expressed his concerns over the recent spike in rent prices across the city of Bengaluru. In his opinion, highly paid tech professionals have contributed to the ever-growing issue. Many youngsters, especially budding engineers, relocate to Bengaluru every year in search of jobs. According to the Redditor, techies who earn “Rs 1.5 lakh to Rs 2.5 lakh” per month may not find it difficult to bear expensive housing rent. But the situation is way more different for people with a “normal salary”.
“I’ve been noticing something that seems to be a growing problem in Bangalore—young techies, especially those just starting in their careers, are getting taken advantage of in ways that seem way too easy. The main issue I see is that these guys aren’t very street smart,” the user wrote on Reddit.
“A lot of these guys are paying insane rent—like 50K, 60K, or even 70K a month—just because they can afford it, but more importantly, they don’t want the hassle of looking for a cheaper place. House hunting on weekends under the hot sun just doesn’t sound appealing, so they settle for whatever they think is convenient,” he added.
As claimed by the Redditor, those techies have provided landlords with the opportunity to ask for “insane amounts” as rent. “The result of all this is that rent prices keep going up. So, when regular engineers, or anyone with a more “normal” salary, try to find a place to live, they’re left dealing with ridiculous rent prices too,” he explained further.
The post resonated with many users, who shared their experiences in the comment section. One of them recalled, “I was working in Electronic City a while back and had rented a decent 2 BHK for 15k in a nice location in Neeladri Road. While my colleague rented a 1 BHK in Koramangala for 35k.”
Another user admitted, “I can say the exact situation is in HITEC city Hyderabad! They don’t think it’s ‘cool’ to bargain or maybe talk to people for help. Just pay the broker insane commission but the apartment should be aesthetic with all facilities.”
A techie, however, defended his fellow ‘outsiders’, saying, “We don’t know what the ideal rent is for a particular house in a particular part of the city. And I’ve now realised that’s one reason why landlords ask where we’re from. So we either pay the high rent or live in bad housing conditions or a cheap PG.”
