The IT hub of India has made headlines once again, this time due to an ugly fight between a resident and an auto driver about payment methods.
The man alleged that the driver refused to take online payment.
It’s Bengaluru once again! The IT hub of India has hit headlines, this time due to an ugly fight between a resident and an auto driver over payment methods. Taking to X, the man faced harsh criticism online after revealing that he walked away without paying after an autorickshaw ride when the driver refused to accept payment through UPI and insisted on taking cash only.
What Happened?
“Auto guy denied UPI this morning. I said, I am not going to pay cash. He threatened a bit. He had already marked paid on the app for the ride. I said either UPI or I will not pay,” the man added.
He added that the driver had already marked the trip as ‘paid’ on the app, indicating that the autorickshaw was booked using a car service app such as Uber or Ola. “I said either UPI or I would not pay. He called someone and asked what to do. The man on the phone wanted to speak to me. I said I wouldn’t talk to any random person,” the Bengaluru man further wrote.

After failing to reach a conclusion, the man threatened the driver to walk away without paying the bill. To which, the autowala, thinking he was bluffing, told him to walk away if he ‘had the guts’. “I walked away,” the man concluded his X post.
How Did Social Media React?
The post instantly grabbed the attention of the viewers, prompting several reactions, with the majority of them calling out the passenger for not paying in cash.
An X user commented, “Congrats. You’ve become a cheap thief by accepting service and refusing to pay, taking his labour. Why didn’t you clarify this before proceeding with the ride and refusing to continue if he didn’t have UPI?”
Another individual wrote, “You are legally compelled to pay for the services provided. The automan is not legally needed to have UPI. “You are not a hero here.”
Some of them tried to give a solution for this issue. A person said, “It’s simple, before getting into the auto, just ask if they take UPI, same way you would at a shop without a visible QR code.”
“Harassing poor drivers is the new norm in digital India. Whereas industrialists are getting loans worth thousands of crores at none,” a comment read.
Someone also mentioned, “You can’t deny paying by cash if he doesn’t accept UPI. UPI is a convenient way to pay. But it is not equivalent to legal tender when it comes to refusing UPI payment. Refusing to pay is plain rude and bad.”
However, this isn’t the first time and such incidents of a passenger’s fight with an auto driver have made the headlines before. Recently, a Bengaluru man was left furious and helpless when his auto driver slowed down mid-ride to look through an actress’ Instagram profile.
