BRICS Currency: In the IT-BT round table 2025, Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal clearly stated that India firmly rejects any proposal of BRICS currency. He said, India does not support BRICS currency. Just think that we are sharing a currency with China. We do not have any such plan. It is impossible to think about BRICS currency.
India is moving forward thoughtfully
This trend is in line with India’s broad strategy in BRICS, on the one hand it maintains its economic relations with America and on the other hand it is also running with other countries involved in the BRICS. Earlier, External Affairs Minister S.K. Jaishankar also said that India does not see any benefit in changing the US dollar, but it also supports settlement on a local currency with BRICS countries like Russia.
ASEAN scope increasing in BRICS
As the BRICS extended its scope by incorporating Indonesia as the tenth member, India is also moving carefully so that it can keep its global status stable between growing geopolitical and economic stresses.
In January, Indonesia officially joined the BRICS as a tenth member. While Nigeria was officially made a partner of the BRICS block, including Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. Now countries like Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam have also shown interest in joining BRICS. This is a sign of the growing scope of ASEAN in the BRICS.
India and Brazil are worried about this
On the one hand, Russia and China are insisting on BRICS currency, while India and Brazil are cautious about the economic results of moving away from the US financial system. US President Donald Trump had said that if the BRICS countries create their new currency or support any other currency, then 100 percent tariffs will be imposed on them.
