After a perplexed judge halted a proceeding, a man admitted that the “person” presenting his case online was an AI avatar rather than a real person.

A judge in the New York Appeals Court became enraged when a plaintiff attempted to present his case before the panel using an AI avatar, and he abruptly ended the proceeding. The incident happened on March 26 in the First Judicial Department of the Appellate Division of the New York State Supreme Court. Jerome Dewald, 74, shocked everyone by using this technique to make his case in an employment dispute. It happened during his presentation last month before the First Judicial Department of the New York State Supreme Court Appellate Division.
“A judge in New York was pi**ed off after a plaintiff tried using an AI lawyer, complete with an avatar,” a user wrote on X (formerly Twitter) while sharing a short clip of the court proceedings. The court’s official YouTube channel has a longer version of the video.
“It may please the court, I come here today…” the AI avatar says this while speaking to the panel of judges. On-screen, the “man” looks like a younger Jerome Dewald. In a matter of seconds, the judges looked at one another, perplexed. After which, a stunned judge asks Dewald if the man is his attorney.
The court had earlier given Dewald the freedom to plead his case. The 74-year-old then responds to the judge’s interruption by saying, “I generated that,” adding, “That is not a real person.”
After this, Justice Sallie Manzanet-Daniels of the First Judicial Department of the Appellate Division becomes irritated and lashes out at Dewald. “It would have been nice to know that when you made your application,” she declares, adding, “I don’t appreciate being misled.” She then screams, “Shut that off.”

Within a few hours, the video had garnered over 700 views.
According to the New York Times, Dewald admitted that the incident had humiliated him and that he had written the judges an apology letter. “My intent was never to deceive but rather to present my arguments in the most efficient manner possible,” according to reports, he stated in his letter of apology. “However, I recognize that proper disclosure and transparency must always take precedence,” he stated.
