When a loved one is hospitalised, most people want their employer to be empathetic. But one woman had a challenging and upsetting experience at work after a personal crisis. Her post on X (previously Twitter) has sparked a firestorm of online debate, not only because of the outrageous demands made by her manager, but also because of what it exposes about workplace culture and boundaries.
Widely circulated on social media, the woman’s story describes how her manager allegedly reacted when she was unable to attend a work event because of a family member, diagnosed with cancer, undergoing surgery. She then faced demands for real-time location sharing, hospital images, and a 30-minute tirade, all of which led to her quitting her job.
According to the post, the woman had previously notified her team lead that she would not be able to attend a work seminar. Her manager persuaded her to go despite the circumstances, though. “There was a seminar at work yesterday, I had already told my team lead I wouldn’t be able to attend. But the manager told me to come yesterday. I told him that a family member had a cancer surgery, and this happened,” she wrote on X.
Her manager requested that she attend the meeting right away rather than provide assistance, and when she failed to do so, he allegedly demanded GPS evidence of her location and even pictures of her relative in the hospital recuperating.
The problem was not limited to digital messages. According to Hindustan Times, the employee claimed in a follow-up post that her manager yelled at her for about 30 minutes about the situation and proceeded to make more irrational demands.
“He also yelled at me for 20-30 minutes, and then told me to go home and send him an apology email along with hospital prescription pictures. I sent him a resignation email instead,” she wrote, as quoted by Hindustan Times.
Take a look:
Many people on social media praised her decision to resign rather than give in, claiming that the manager’s actions were improper and domineering.
Shared on April 21, the post has racked up over 1 lakh views so far. Many people responded strongly to the post on social media, urging the woman to pursue the matter further and denouncing the boss.
A user said, “Don’t you have casual holidays? After sharing the details, please do address how he needs to speak to you or any other employees. This is not the way.”
Another user commented, “What is this way of talking? Report him to top management if possible.”
“Prime example of a toxic manager!” an individual said on X.
“Update the name of your place of work, the manager, firm etc etc, too, so that people will be vigilant!” another wrote.
Because of the employee’s experience, other people have opened up about their challenging work environments, such as unpaid salaries and a lack of help during personal emergencies.
