Narak Chaturdashi 2024: Keeping fast on Roop Chaudas also has its own importance. It is believed that by observing fast on Roop Chaudas, Lord Krishna bestows beauty on a person. On the day of Roop Chaturdashi, one should wake up before sunrise, massage with sesame oil and take bath by adding chirchiri leaves in water. After this one should have darshan of Lord Vishnu and Lord Krishna. By doing this sins are destroyed and beauty is achieved.
Also, on the night of Roop Chaudas, according to tradition, the eldest member of the house lights a lamp and rotates it around the house and then keeps it somewhere far away from the house. This lamp is called Yam Diya. During this time the rest of the family members stay in their house. It is believed that by moving this lamp around the house and taking it outside, all the evil powers go out of the house.
According to the legend, the king of Pragjyotishpur city was a demon named Narakasura. With his power he troubled all the gods like Indra, Varun, Agni, Vayu etc. He started troubling the saints also. Started torturing women. When his atrocities increased too much, the gods and sages took refuge in Lord Krishna.
Lord Shri Krishna assured him of freedom from Narakasura, but Narakasura was cursed to die at the hands of a woman. Therefore, Lord Shri Krishna made his wife Satyabhama his charioteer and with her help he killed Narakasura. In this way, Shri Krishna killed Narakasura on Chaturdashi of Krishna Paksha of Kartik month and freed the gods and saints from his terror. In his happiness, people lit lamps in their homes on the next day i.e. on the new moon day of Kartik month. Since then the festivals of Narak Chaturdashi and Diwali started being celebrated.
