Researchers from Nagpur University have discovered a 3,000-year-old civilisation remains, including houses, in Maharashtra’s Yavatmal district. The stunning discovery, hinting at the existence of an ancient, advanced settlement, dates back to the Iron Age, according to the researchers.

According to PTI, a team from the Nagpur University found the remains after excavating a village identified as Pachkhed, in Babhulgaon taluka. The Department of Ancient Indian History, Culture and Archaeology team carried out the excavation through 2023-24, uncovering ancient remains, said Dr. Prabash Sahu, department head.

One of the key findings of the process has been the discovery of an 8.73-metres of cultural deposits that was found at Pachkhed village mound during last year’s excavation.

“We divided these deposits into four periods…period one-Iron Age, which was divided into sub periods. The cultural sequence of the findings starts with the Iron Age on the basis of pottery and artefact remains found,” Sahu noted, adding that this was followed by three different periods. According to the team’s findings, the findings made their way into the Satavahana period, the Medieval period and then it (the location which has been found) was used as a watch tower during the Nizam era.

Shedding light on the houses of the then era, Sahu highlighted the discovery of circular houses with limestone floors. These houses had wooden posts at their periphery, Sahu said, adding that the team has located some structural remains from the period.

“In the evidence which we recorded, we found a complete house plan having a chulha (mud stove), pottery, iron objects, beads of semi-precious stones, terracotta beads and bone objects,” he said.

For further confirmation, the samples have been sent to the Inter University Accelerator Centre in New Delhi. Here, they will be subjected to AMS dating, to ascertain the time period to which they belong. A report on the same is expected by May-June this year, Sahu added.

The sample testing will confirm if the findings are 3,000 years old and help establish their accurate historical chronology.
