Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a disease in which fat starts accumulating in the liver without drinking alcohol. This disease starts from the normal level and the condition of the patient can also be very serious. This can lead to non-alcoholic steotheepatitis (Nash), which increases the risk of liver inflammation, fibrosis, cirrhosis (liver shrinking) or even liver cancer.
Revealed in AIIMS study
A panel of doctors at the Gastroenterology Department of AIIMS Delhi studied it, which has been published in the Journal of Clinical and Experimental Hepatology. It also includes Dr. Shalimar of AIIMS Delhi. It was revealed in Sadati that around 25 % of the world is affected by NAFLD. The disease is spreading the most in the Middle East and South America, while in Africa its cases are getting very low. The global rate of Nash is between 1.5 % to 6.5 %. According to the 2017 Global Burden of Disease report, about 3.67 lakh new cases of Nash are coming up every year, which are doubled compared to 1990. In such a situation, it is believed that Nash can become the biggest reason for liver transplant in the future.
Which people have the highest risk of Nafld?
- Diabetes (55-60%)
- Obesity (65-95%)
- Metabolic syndrome (73%)
Things are very bad in India
NAFLD has been found in 6.7% to 55.1% adults in India. One -third of cases of increasing symptoms without liver enzyme can be due to NAFLD. The liver investigation out for liver transplant revealed that two-thirds of cryptogenic cirrhosis (due to no clear) patients were NAFLD. This disease is also increasing in children, in which 7.3% to 22.4% healthy children are affected. This disease becomes more serious with age.
Metabolic diseases are increasing in India
In adults in India, pre-diabetes is found to be 19-22%, diabetes 15–19%, and metabolic syndrome 30%. These problems are increasing in cities as well as villages. Due to the increase in obesity, diabetes and metabolic syndrome, NAFLD cases are also increasing rapidly, which is causing pressure on health services.
Dr. Pramod Garg, head of the Gastroenterology Department of AIIMS, said that in the last 10-15 years, the cases of fatty liver have increased rapidly. Liver cancer cases have also increased, the main reason is the wrong lifestyle. To fix this, a change in lifestyle is necessary.
Reduce food oil
AIIMS doctors like Dr. Pramod Garg, Dr. Govind Makharia, Dr. Shalimar, Dr. Deepak Gunjan, Dr. Samagara Aggarwal and Dr. Sagnik Biswas emphasized the reasons and solutions of NAFLD. Dr. Deepak Gunjan said that the change in lifestyle is the biggest need today. It is necessary to reduce the amount of oil in food by 10 %. The study suggests that by 2025 40-50 % people can become obese, which will increase many health problems. Reducing oil will reduce the risk of diseases like liver, but also heart, diabetes and cancer.
Follow healthy three formula for healthy life
- Healthy Diet: Half a plate should contain green vegetables and fruits. Avoid junk and packaged food, as they contain trans fat, which is harmful for liver.
- Exercise: Exercise or sports is necessary for 30-40 minutes daily. It is beneficial for the whole body.
- Healthy Sleep: Sleeping on time and getting up, as well as reducing stress is very important.
Not just medicines, lifestyle is also necessary
Dr. Sagnik Biswas said that fatty liver cannot be treated only with medicines. This is a disease whose biggest cure is healthy lifestyle. If the patient has other problems like diabetes, obesity or sleep apnea, then doctors can give medicines. NAFLD is detected by ultrasound and liver function test. The disease occurs in four stages, of which stage 4 is the most serious cirrhosis.
Keep these things in mind
- Leave alcohol completely: Liver causes more damage to the liver.
- Focus on weight and diet: You can cure fatty liver with the right diet and weight control.
- Doctor advice: Patients with diabetes or other problems need to see a doctor.
Balance required in Indian diet
Dr. Sagnik said that Indian diet should have a balance of carbohydrates, protein and iron. Junk and packaged food spoil this balance. It is necessary to avoid trans fat, as it increases the risk of liver and other diseases.
