A cardiologist from Bengaluru recently posted a story about sweet revenge on social media that has touched thousands of people. As the Director of Cardiology at Kauvery Hospital, Dr Deepak Krishnamurthy described how, when he was just beginning out in medicine, he silenced a relative who had been taunting him about his finances.

Dr. Krishnamurthy was reacting to a widely shared post on X (previously Twitter) that posed the question, “How do you all avoid uncle aunties asking your salary?”

In a social media post, Dr Krishnamurthy described how a family member would often make fun of him for pursuing a career in medicine, pointing out that he was financially reliant on his father while other people his age were already making a living.

The doctor’s ultimate reply, however, came when the same relative later asked him about his compensation once he had established himself: his yearly tax payments exceeded the total yearly income of the relative’s two sons.

“A relative who was always condescending about me joining the medical stream with taunts about how I’m dependent on my father when others are earning money happened to ask my salary once when I was well settled. My annual taxes were higher than both his sons’ annual income,” Dr. Krishnamurthy wrote on X.

Shared on March 18, the post has garnered over 99,000 views so far. The hashtag #satisfied at the end of the message resonated with social media users, many of whom had similar experiences of being undervalued in their early professional lives.

A user said, “Manifesting the day when I can casually flex my tax payments and watch my nosy relatives do the mental math in shock. Until then, I’ll just smile through the interrogation.”

Another wrote, “Exactly.. people don’t realise something…yes medical degree is long and arduous journey… but medical pays well with time and experience while IT salary stagnates.”

“Be above that! Just smile and ignore their former taunts! Medical education is a very long process and they are ignorant!” a user on X remarked.

“Definition of manifestation,” another user commented.

In India, doctors go through years of intense training, often taking more than ten years to earn their medical degrees and specialisations.
