A large number of flamingos have started flocking to the creek in Thane Creek Flamingo Sanctuary in Navi Mumbai following an annual tradition. In the recent video shared on social media, thousands of Greater and Lesser flamingos were captured soaring gracefully over the water in Thane Creek Flamingo Sanctuary, reflecting shades of pink against the serene blue. The sanctuary, a vital ecological hotspot, witnesses this annual migration every winter as the birds arrive in search of food and a safe habitat.

“Stunning sights at the Thane Creek Flamingo Sanctuary, where tens of thousands of Greater and Lesser migrate to each year. A true ecological marvel in the heart of India’s financial capital, Mumbai. HC Wong,” read the caption of the post.
Speaking about the Thane Creek Flamingo Sanctuary (TCFS), it extends from Vashi to Bhandup in Mumbai. Located on the western bank of the Thane Creek, between the Vashi and Airoli bridges, the sanctuary witnesses’ flamingos every winter. These birds migrate from states like Gujarat and Rajasthan, as well as from Iran, Pakistan, Afghanistan, and even Israel. This year, they arrived with the New Year, marking the beginning of yet another season. Home to around 200 species of birds, including six species of flamingos, the TCFS has been given the status of a Ramsar site by the International Wetlands Convention.
Meanwhile, Amazon has announced that it will invest $1.2 million to restore the mangrove forests and mudflats that are nesting grounds for the iconic flamingo population in Mumbai. In collaborating with Hasten Regeneration, a social enterprise focused on ecosystem restoration, the initiative will fund the cleanup of the polluted banks of Thane Creek and support mangrove plantations in Gujarat. The investment comes through Amazon’s $100 million Right Now Climate Fund, which supports climate resilience, nature conservation, and biodiversity projects in the communities where the company operates.
In a press release, co-founder of Hasten Regeneration’s India branch and Director of Alaap Sheeba Sen said, “We are also creating a positive social impact, employing women to replant mangroves in critical stopover sites for the precious flamingos on the way to their nesting grounds.”
“The preservation of Mumbai’s flamingo habitat is paramount, not only for the biodiversity it sustains but also for the communities whose livelihoods depend on it. By joining forces with Hasten Regeneration on this landmark project, we aim to safeguard Mumbai’s flamingo habitat for future generations, says Abhinav Singh, Vice President of Operations, Amazon India.
