Shubman Gill on Thursday surpassed West Indies great Garry Sobers to register the record for most runs by a visiting captain in a Test series in England.
Gill, who had 722 runs in the series ahead of the fifth Test against England at the Oval, went past Sobers when he scored his first runs of the match—a couple off Chris Woakes through midwicket.
Sobers had amassed 722 runs in eight innings during the Wisden Trophy, held in 1966. He averaged a whopping 103.14 in that series, and registered three centuries and two fifties.
The top-five list of most runs by a visiting captain in a Test series in England includes Graeme Smith, Allan Border and Virat Kohli.
