Budget 2025: Narendra Modi The government -led government has changed many traditional arrangements related to India’s annual budget during its tenure, which had been the gift of colonial times over the years. These changes were not only towards making the budget process modern and relevant, but were also made to ensure better use of time and resources.
Day and time to present budget
During British rule, India’s annual budget was presented at 5 pm on the last working day of February. This time was chosen so that members of the British Parliament sitting in London could see it immediately. The Modi government ended this tradition and made the date to present the budget in the beginning of February. Also, the time was changed to 11 am. This change provided more time for the implementation of the schemes and made the process more timely.
Rail budget and general budget merger
From 1924, the railway budget and general budget were presented separately in India. This system was started by the colonial government keeping in mind the economic importance of the railway. In 2017, the Modi government ended this tradition and made the railway budget a part of the general budget. This step helped in consolidation of resources and the Railways were made an integral part of the overall economic development of the country.
Digital budget and pudding ceremonies change
The ‘Halwa Ceremony’ to be held before every budget session was also made symbolic. This ceremony, which used to mark the onset of printing of budget documents, has now become a formality only. Along with this, the Modi government presented the first full digital budget in 2021. The tablet replaced the leather briefcase, which is a major step towards the self -sufficient India and the digital age.
