Kangala Wildlife Rescue announced the news of a miniature dachshund named Valerie being rescued after 529 days alone in the harsh wilderness of Australia. Valerie has been found alive after more than 500 days of search since she went missing in November 2023 during a camping trip on Kangaroo Island. The incident happened while owner Georgia Gardner and her boyfriend, Joshua Fishlock had gone fishing.
Left in a playpen momentarily, Gardner and Fishlock saw Valerie missing when they returned. The sausage dog showed incredible survival ability as she dodged dangers like venomous snakes and scorching heat during her time away from the two owners. Kangala, the charity that underwent the rescue, said relocating Valerie was made possible via a ‘scent trail’ after they used Gardner’s t-shirt to create a trap.
‘After weeks of tireless efforts, Valerie has been safely rescued and is fit and well,’ Kangala shared in a social media post, revealing how the charity took pains to relocate the dog. Using surveillance cameras, a trap cage with a remote door, food, Gardner’s clothes and some of Valerie’s familiar toys, the volunteers covered over 5,000 kilometres during more than 1,000 hours of search.
One of Kangala’s directors Lisa Karran explained how she approached Valerie once found. Karran wore remnants of Gardener’s clothes and made sure she sat with the anxious dog until she was ‘completely calm’. Jared Karran, her partner and fellow Kangala director, said during their 15-minute Instagram video, ‘Of all dogs, that would be the last one I would say would survive out there, but they do have a good sense of smell.’
Karran mentioned how delicate the time Valerie spent in the trap was as they had to ensure she didn’t escape again. ‘She went right into the back corner, which is where we wanted her. I pressed the button and thankfully it all worked perfectly,” he said. ‘I know people were a little bit frustrated, like ‘why is it taking so long?’ But these are the things that we were doing in the background.’
