A Mexican actress, who worked in short films, died earlier this week after suffering from diarrhoea and vomiting following a cleansing ritual at a retreat. As part of a Healer Training Diploma program in Mexico, Marcela Alcazar Rodriguez consumed a drink called Kombo.
According to the Mirror, the 33-year-old actress participated in the traditional South American Kambo ritual, which entails consuming frog venom to rid the body of toxins, getting burned, and drinking water. Nevertheless, it is well-recognised that the practice could be fatal.
Participants in the ceremony have to consume more than one litre of water. Small burns are then made on their skin, and frog mucus is applied to the wounds, the Mirror adds.

As part of the body’s reactions during the healing process, Rodriguez began to throw up and experienced severe diarrhoea, according to The Metro. When her friend visited her, she finally gave in after initially refusing assistance while ill, as per witnesses. After being taken to a Red Cross hospital, Rodriguez died there.
A shaman at the retreat in Moyocoyani, Durango, reportedly informed her she couldn’t leave, according to the Metro. But the person ran away when her health deteriorated. Police are reportedly looking for the shaman right now.
The time it took for her to reach the hospital was not immediately known. Meanwhile, a tribute to her was shared on Instagram by Mapache Films, a production company from Mexico, identifying her.

Her death left a huge void in our hearts and our professional community, the post said. The tragedy has led to discussions concerning the risks of these age-old customs and their growing appeal to those seeking wellness.
