Meta has initiated a fresh round of layoffs, aiming to cut its workforce by 5%. According to Business Insider, more than 3,600 employees across Europe, Asia, and the US will be affected. In an internal memo, the tech giant stated that the layoffs are performance-based, targeting employees who did not meet expectations. However, several dismissed workers have challenged this claim, asserting they had no history of negative performance reviews. Among them is Elana Reman Safner, a former product counsel at MetaWorks, who was let go earlier this week after more than three years with the company.
Elana Reman Safner, who lives in the US, slammed Meta in a LinkedIn post, claiming that the decision to fire her was not based on her performance. She said she would not forget a certain aspect of her time at Meta and that she was “collateral damage” of Mark Zuckerberg’s “newfound masculine energy.”
After returning from a six-month maternity leave, Elana Reman Safner posted on LinkedIn that she was laid off a few weeks later. Despite Meta’s pledges to fire underperforming workers, she claimed, the software firm specifically targeted workers with a recent leave history. Since Meta had never given her a poor performance rating, she was taken aback by the company’s decision to suddenly fire her.
“Meta laid me off yesterday in its ‘performance-based’ layoffs, and I was blindsided,” Elana Reman Safner shared on LinkedIn.
“I have never received a review below ‘Meets All’ my 3+ years at Meta, and I was on mat leave for 6 months until November. It is very hard to believe that – despite Meta indicating my expectations are prorated – I did not do enough. Many laid off today have similar stories – a history of good performance, and a recent leave of absence,” Elana Reman Safner added.
Elana Reman Safner provided a thorough rundown of her responsibilities at Meta and her accomplishments while working there. “Even when I disagreed with product direction or was disappointed by Meta in the news, my clients and colleagues kept me energized! I have never worked in a place where every person I work with is someone I would be friends with outside of work. Reality Labs Legal is a family – I am grateful for you & I will miss working with you,” additionally, she wrote to convey her appreciation for the team she worked with.
The Washington, DC-based product counsel, however, also had some harsh things to say about the company that fired her. In her list of things, she would not miss about Meta, she mentioned her career path, the stress of the work, and Zuckerberg’s attitude of dismissing “beloved products” that he did not think were glamorous enough.
“Here’s what I won’t miss: my career trajectory being completely at the whim of product decisions I have no control over, mental overload, 34-page one-pagers, having 62 tabs open, deprecating beloved products because they weren’t ‘moonshot’ enough for Zuck, Zuck’s newfound “masculine energy” and being its collateral damage,” Elana Reman Safner also mentioned.
Recently, Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Meta, controversially told Joe Rogan, comedian, actor, and former television host, on his podcast that American corporations needed to reclaim their “masculine energy” because they had become neutered. Following Donald Trump’s election as US president, Meta terminated its diversity, equity, and inclusion initiative soon before the layoffs.
