A video capturing a tense verbal exchange between a man and a woman over language ignited a debate on social media as the clip was widely shared. The incident is purported to have occurred in Maharashtra. A video of the same was shared online by the account @gharkekalesh on May 12 however the location is currently unverified.
In the brief clip, a man is seen aggressively insisting that the woman speak Marathi because she resides in Maharashtra. The woman firmly refuses his demands, stating her lack of proficiency in the language and her unwillingness to be compelled. “Nahi aata mujhe Marathi. Nahi bolungi. Aata hi nahi toh kaise bolungi (I don’t know how to speak Marathi. I won’t speak it. If I don’t know it, how do you expect me to speak it?),” she says.
In the recording, the man can be seen filming the woman while questioning her presence in Maharashtra if she cannot communicate in the local tongue. “Tera ghar kahan hai? Marathi aati nahi toh kyu reh rahi hai yahan (Where is your home? If you don’t know Marathi, why are you even living here?).”

The Woman Responds, “Meri Zubaan Mai Kuch Bhi Bolun. Mera ghar yahan hai, toh yahi rahungi na. Nahi aati marathi, kya kar lowge? That’s why I live here. I don’t know marathi, what will you do about it?), “She asserts.
As the argument escalates, several bystanders can be seen intervening.
