Shubman Gill is just three matches old as India’s Test captain. While he is enjoying the moment and learning on the job, the 25-year-old claims it has been more of a mental challenge than a physical one.
“The kind of learning and the kind of experience that I have had playing with this amazing bunch of players against a really good opponent (has been enjoyable). I have had a great experience,” Gill said, adding, “Physically, I would say it has been less tiring, but mentally, more tiring.”
“Because when you are there as a player, sometimes you are waiting for something to happen and for the ball to come to you. Whereas, when you are the captain, you are thinking most of the time. So, you are involved more mentally,” he said.
The leadership role hasn’t affected his batting in the series so far, as, barring the previous game at Lord’s, Gill has made an impact in the series with the bat, amassing 607 runs in six innings.
However, with the series on the line, his real test begins now. The team has been plagued with injuries, and that certainly has affected the combination. On Sunday, Nitish Kumar Reddy was ruled out of the Test series with a knee injury. Meanwhile, Arshdeep Singh, Rishabh Pant, and Akash Deep are also struggling with niggles of their own.
Gill, however, admitted he was prepared for handling such a situation.
“It is not ideal when, after every match, you have a different combination. But it was something that I had prepared for before the series, thinking there would be a scenario where I would have to have a different combination for every match. So, I kind of planned it before the series in terms of how we are going to go about it,” he said.
