In a shocking incident in New York, a 29-year-old man, identified as Isaiah Gurley, was arrested for setting a lifeless pit bull on fire. The horrifying incident took place at around 4:45 AM on Thursday, July 24, near 128th Street and 116th Avenue in South Ozone Park, Queens. As caught on CCTV camera, he was seen dragging the motionless body of the dog and setting it on fire on the street before walking away.
As reported by the New York Daily News, the police said that the dog looked healthy and unhurt, as seen on CCTV. As per the police’s observation, it had a normal weight and was not weak or starving. According to the New York Police Department (NYPD), Gurley poured an accelerant on the pit bull before setting it on fire. By the time officers arrived, the dog had died, and its burned body was discovered at the scene.
How Did The Police Arrest Isaiah Gurley?
The man was also found stealing oil from a shop right before the incident occurred. He was seen dressed in a maroon sweatshirt with a tan polo logo and a light brown MCM backpack, a detail that helped the officers track him down. The police had put up wanted posters at the Queens Centre Mall, and he was arrested after being recognised by someone.
How Did Social Media React?
One user tagged NYPD and said, “I have a can of gasoline and a box of matches for you. You’re welcome. Merry Christmas.”
Another added, “This monster needs to spend the rest of his life in prison.”
A different user wrote, “Setting fire to a dog? I would love to be in charge. This monster, with an audience watching, would be set alight. It would teach these barbaric s—s a lesson. ‘An eye for an eye.'”
Why Was Isaiah Gurley Released Despite Such A Horrifying Incident?
He is facing charges like aggravated animal cruelty, fifth-degree arson, reckless endangerment and petit larceny. Despite how horrifying the case is, none of the charges require bail under New York’s bail laws. Hence, he was released from jail and placed under supervised release.
According to a report by The New York Post, Gurley was caring for the dog, which belonged to one of his friends, for days. After his arrest on Monday, July 28, he told the police that he kicked it till it was motionless. “I killed the dog by kicking it to death. And I burned the dog’s body after it was already dead,” Gurley told the police as per the complaint.
Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz called the allegations “heart-wrenching,” and added, “Animals are not punching bags. They are not toys. They have every right to proper care, just as humans do.”
She added, “We will use all tools available to hold the defendant responsible for his alleged actions.”
Isaiah Gurley is set to return to court on September 17. If found guilty of the charges, he could face up to two years in prison.
