Life is full of unexpected and emotional twists, often leaving others surprised or moved by what we experience. One such touching story recently surfaced when a man and his wife took a DNA test, only to uncover a deeply emotional chapter from the past.
Sharing the story on Reddit’s r/23andme forum, the woman wrote, “My husband and I did a DNA test one year for our anniversary. He never checks it, but one day, I did out of curiosity and that’s when I discovered a long-lost relative.”
She learnt that her husband had a cousin whose grandfather had once served in the army. During his posting, he fell in love with a young woman. But soon after, he was deployed to war, and the two lost contact. Unknown to him, the woman was pregnant and gave birth to a child he never knew about.
Tragically, the grandfather never married, never entered another relationship, and never had children. For years, the family assumed he might be gay, as he never showed interest in anyone. As he approached his 60s, he often expressed regret about not having a family, though he had always longed for one.
A Family Reunited Decades Later
The woman continued in her post, “In a single day, this man in his 80s discovered he not only had a son, but also six grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, and even a great-great-grandchild on the way.”
It was later revealed that the grandfather had returned years later in search of the woman he had once loved, but couldn’t find her. She had gone back to care for her ailing mother and raised the child with her family. Like him, she never married again and had no other children. Sadly, she passed away from cancer a few years ago.
An Emotional Reaction Online
The post received overwhelming reactions online. Many users said it was one of the most touching yet bittersweet stories they had ever read. One person wrote, “This is the saddest and most beautiful love story I’ve come across. Neither of them married again—it’s heartbreaking and poetic at the same time.”
