A resident of Mumbai took his Tata Altroz car for ‘free service’ to address issues with the gears and clutch, along with other minor repairs. However, after an inspection, the service centre handed him a bill exceeding ₹10,000, excluding taxes. Shocked and frustrated, the man turned to the Internet, questioning whether the charges imposed during a supposed “free service” were justified.
“Tata Car 3rd Free Service B******t Charges. Is it Justified?” asked Reddit user “rahulrangafp” while sharing a picture of the bill on the platform’s “CarsIndia” community. The man also attached a picture of the bill and revealed that his car is only a year old and hasn’t even completed less than 9,000 km.
According to the bill, the service centre charged approximately Rs 10,900, excluding GST. The breakdown included ₹2,159 for engine oil, Rs 179 for an oil filter, Rs 750 for consumables, Rs 1,850 for brake cleaning, Rs 1,350 for injector cleaning, Rs 900 for AC duct cleaning, Rs 1,650 for interior cleaning, and Rs 350 for door lubrication.
Take a look at the bill here:
In response, a Redditor wrote, “Ask them on why a new car which has not even completed 10000kms would need ‘Injector Cleaning’? Atrocious of the service centre to bill you this much for a basic service. Can’t imagine how much would they charge for a Major Service, post your free service.”
“Same with ‘door lubrication’. Doors don’t need regular lubrication specially below 10k kms. Even if they need it, Rs. 350 don’t justify it. He would have barely spent 5 minutes spraying some on the hinges,” added another.
A third posted, “All service centres are looting people. There should be a law which regulates these things. Even if the product is faulty, we need to pay for it in the name of service. Like fuel lid, gear getting stuck are something which should be fixed for free. And half of the cleaning which was mentioned here wouldn’t even happened. 80 percent of the service centres in India are scamsters.”
“Bro always use the tata service app. They gave me a quote of 8k for my 3rd service of altroz. When I checked in the app, it came down to 3k. They immediately apologised and did only what I wanted,” suggested a fourth.
A fifth advised, “Decline everything except engine oil and oil filter. Get wheel alignment done from outside. Ask what is included in “consumables”. Tell them to replace air and ac filter.”
