Stories of families separated at the Kumbh Mela have long been recounted, often portrayed comically in films. However, this year’s Maha Kumbh Mela has become a beacon of hope for one family, offering a chance for reunification.
A family from Jharkhand claims that a man named Gangasagar Yadav left home approximately 27 years ago, abandoning his wife and two children. Now, it is being claimed that he has been identified as an Aghori Baba at the Maha Kumbh.
On 29 January, a family from the Dhanbad district of Jharkhand claimed they had found their lost relative, Gangasagar Yadav, at the Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj. The now 65-year-old Yadav is an Aghori Baba associated with a Sadhu community known as Rajkumar.
The family stated that Gangasagar Yadav disappeared abruptly after relocating to Patna in 1998, and his whereabouts have remained unknown since. During this period, his wife, Dhanwa Devi, was left to single-handedly raise their two sons, Kamlesh and Vimlesh.
“For years, we had abandoned hope of ever seeing him again. However, one of our relatives spotted a man resembling Gangasagar at the Kumbh Mela and sent us his photograph. We immediately travelled to the fair and met Baba Rajkumar. He, however, denied his previous identity, claiming to be a Sadhu from Varanasi,” Gangasagar’s younger brother, Murali Yadav, said.
However, the family identified Baba Rajkumar as Gangasagar, pointing out distinctive identifying marks such as long teeth, injury marks on the forehead, and an old wound on the knee.
Gangasagar’s wife, Dhanwa Devi, and Murali Yadav informed the Kumbh Mela police about the matter and have demanded a DNA test from Baba Rajkumar. “We will wait until the Kumbh Mela ends, and if necessary, we will have a DNA test conducted. If the test does not prove our claim, we will apologise to Baba Rajkumar,” Murli Yadav said.
Meanwhile, some family members have returned home, while others remain at the fair, keeping watch over Baba Rajkumar and his Sadhvi companion. If the DNA test confirms the family’s belief, they are prepared to pursue legal action. At the time of Gangasagar’s disappearance, his elder son was two years old, while his younger son was yet to be born.
