For the past 40 years, a tea seller turned ascetic from Pratapgarh, Uttar Pradesh, known widely as ‘Chai Wala Baba,’ has been offering free guidance to civil service aspirants. His unique approach to teaching has caught attention as he has vowed to remain silent and abstain from solid food, surviving solely on 10 cups of tea a day. Identified as Dinesh Swaroop Brahmachari, the ascetic shares his knowledge through WhatsApp. He provides study material and answers students’ questions on the platform.
Baba, who is currently at Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj, continues to support aspirants with study notes and guidance, all free of cost. Rajesh Singh, a civil service aspirant and one of his students, shared his experience with ANI, saying, “I have been associated with Maharaj Ji for almost four to five years now. We are his disciples. From time to time, he guides us whenever we need his assistance.”
Singh explained that despite Baba’s silence, communication is seamless through written messages or gestures. “Language requires a medium, which can be written or oral, and no one calls it non-verbal. Guruji is silent, but we understand through his gestures and WhatsApp messages. Regarding our queries, we can write them to him, and he responds in writing. We don’t believe that the written medium is the best, but it serves its purpose,” he said.

The Kumbh Mela, the world’s largest religious gathering, is held once every 12 years at one of four holy locations in India: Prayagraj, Haridwar, Ujjain and Nashik. This year, it will take place in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, from January 13 to February 26. Pilgrims will gather at the Triveni Sangam to take a holy dip for spiritual purification.
The origins of the Maha Kumbh are rooted in the Hindu myth of Samudra Manthan or the churning of the ocean. During this event, Lord Vishnu, disguised as Mohini, carried the pot of Amrit (nectar) to protect it from the demons. A fierce battle broke out between the gods and demons, and in the chaos, four drops of the nectar fell at four different locations – Prayagraj, Haridwar, Nashik and Ujjain. These drops of sacred nectar made these places holy, and over time, they became the sites for the Kumbh Mela.
