An Indian woman working in London refused to work five days a week from the office due to the expensive commute.

At a time when companies are discussing and formulating return-to-office policies, the young woman, shared on LinkedIn, that she wouldn’t “drain” her money on London’s expensive commute. “I won’t be working 5 or 4 days in the office. PERIOD,” she wrote.

The 25-year-old, who works as a global influencer strategy manager, added that despite having a good job, she struggled to pay her bills every month. “I am 25, in a so-called ‘good’ career, living in London and still struggle to pay my bills every month. I’ll probably never own a home,” she continued.

Furthermore, she stated that job progress was an unattainable dream when all top positions were occupied by those who “won’t budge until they retire.”

“So, tell me again why I should happily spend a portion of my already-taxed-to-death salary on the world’s most expensive transport system just to sit in an office and dial into online calls?” the woman asked.

In addition to opposing her company’s strict office attendance policy, she also emphasised the reality of stagnant pay. She claimed that GenZ employees were treated unfairly in terms of wages and perks as compared to Gen X and early millennials.

“We’re expected to survive on salaries from 5 to 10 years ago while paying 5 to 10 times the cost of living,” she posted on LinkedIn. “Meanwhile, the older generations have their houses, savings, and vacations—yet we’re the ones being told we need to ‘show up’ more.”

She also criticised the idea that employees spend a considerable amount of their taxed salary on commuting expenses, just to sit at a desk and attend virtual meetings that might just as well be held from home.

Adding to this, she also highlighted the GenZ employee’s priorities while working and wrote, “We prioritise flexibility, health, and not draining a third if not more of our income just to be physically present at a desk.”

To solve this problem and have ‘real’ control over her work, the strategy manager stated that she switched to freelancing. “Maybe that’s the future: instead of chasing promotions in a system that doesn’t work for us, we can construct careers on our own terms,” she concluded.
