Pakistan Pollution: The air pollution crisis has reached a serious level in the Punjab province of Pakistan. The air quality index (AQI) in major cities like Lahore and Multan has crossed 2000, placing it among the most polluted areas globally. This situation has forced the government to take strict measures, including lockdown and other stringent restrictions.
Air pollution in Pakistan has reached the dangerous level of 2000 AQI. This figure falls in the extremely dangerous category and poses serious health risks to humans and animals. This can be gauged from the fact that more than 6 lakh people in Pakistan were affected by respiratory diseases in the last week. More than 65,000 people had to be hospitalized. During this period, cases of dry cough, pneumonia, chest infection, and shortness of breath have increased rapidly in hospitals.
Pressure on Pakistan’s hospitals
Mayo Hospital in Lahore, Pakistan, treated more than 4,000 patients suffering from pollution, while Jinnah Hospital treated 3,500 patients. Because of this, OPD working duties have been extended till 8 pm. Leaves of paramedical staff have been cancelled. In such a situation, the government has announced to implement complete lockdown in Lahore and Multan on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
However, it has also been said that if the AQI situation remains bad, the lockdown period can be extended. Marriage halls and restaurants have been closed due to the lockdown. Schools and colleges are temporarily closed. Private offices were allowed to function at 50 per cent and strict action has been taken against those violating pollution norms.
