
India defeated England by 336 runs in the second Test at Birmingham and leveled the five-match series 1-1 on Sunday.
India put up a daunting target of 608 runs thanks to Shubman Gill’s record-breaking Test as a batter where he scored 269 and 161 across the two innings. In reply, England was bowled out for 271, with Akash Deep finishing with a match haul of 10 for 187 across each innings.
Here is the list of records broken during the second Test at Edgbaston:
1) At 25, Gill became the fourth youngest Indian captain to win a Test match.
2) India registered its first ever win at Edgbaston.
3) England registered its second biggest loss against India by runs margin.
4) Gill overtook Virat Kohli’s record (293) for scoring most runs by an Indian captain in a Test – 430; during the innings, Gill also broke Sunil Gavaskar’s record (344) of highest match aggregate by an Indian in a Test.
5) He became the second Indian to score a double century and century in the same Test after Gavaskar. However, he’s the first player ever to score a 250 and a 150 in the same Test.
6) Gill’s 269 is the highest score by an Indian captain (Prev best: Virat Kohli – 254* vs South Africa in 2019); highest score by an Indian batter in England (Prev best: Sunil Gavaskar – 221 vs England, 1979); highest score by an Indian captain in away Test (Prev best: Virat Kohli – 200 vs West Indies, 2016).
7) He became the fifth player to score double century in both ODIs and Tests after Sachin Tendulkar, Rohit Sharma, Virender Sehwag, and Chris Gayle
8) Jamie Smith scored 184 in the first innings – the highest score by an England keeper in Tests. He reached his century in 80 balls, joint third-fastest by an England batter in Tests.
9) England lost six batters on a duck in the first innings, becoming the ninth team in Test history to record such instance.
10) Harry Brook and Jamie Smith added 303 runs and registered the second-highest sixth-wicket partnership for England in Tests.
