India on Tuesday (December 31, 2024) said it is providing all possible assistance to explore relevant options in the case of an Indian nurse facing death row in Yemen.
Kerala resident Nimisha Priya has been sentenced to death for allegedly murdering a Yemeni citizen. Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said, ‘We are aware of the conviction of Ms. Nimisha Priya in Yemen. We understand that Priya’s family is considering relevant options.’ Randhir Jaiswal said in response to a media question, ‘The government is providing all possible help in this matter.’
Who is Nimisha Priya and why is she sentenced to death in Yemen?
Nimisha Priya has been convicted of the murder of a Yemeni citizen, Talal Abdo Mahdi, who died of drug overdose. Has happened. Nimisha, a resident of Pallakad district of Kerala, had gone to Yemen 16 years ago. His family worked as daily wage laborers, so he decided to go to Yemen to help his family financially. Here she worked as a nurse in different hospitals in Yemen between 2008 and 2014. After this he decided to open his own clinic. The law of Yemen says that to start any business in the country, it is necessary to have a partner of a Yemeni citizen, hence Nimisha was looking for a partner for the clinic.
Then he met Talal Mahdi. According to media reports, Talal met her during his visit to Kerala in 2015 and he also met Nimisha’s husband Tommy Thomas. Talal stayed at his house also. Then Nimisha returned to Yemen and started a clinic with Talal. Nimisha was the owner of the clinic, but her share in it was only 33 percent and Mahdi had 67 percent. The trouble started when Talal Mehdi stopped giving the share of the clinic’s income to Nimisha Priya. Nimisha’s husband and daughter were also planning to come to Yemen, but they could not come due to the civil war.
Later there was a dispute between Nimisha and Talal. Nimisha alleges that Talal Mehdi cut her wedding photograph and added his own photo, making it appear as if Talal was married to Nimisha. Talal also told his family and clinic staff that both of them were married. Nimisha also complained about Mahdi, but he presented fake documents, which were also accepted by the court. Nimisha alleges that Talal Mahdi also physically abused her several times. Police arrested Talal due to Nimisha’s complaint and drug addiction.
As soon as Mahdi came out of jail, he started harassing Nimisha again and Nimisha’s passport was also with him, due to which Nimisha could not leave Yemen. Frustrated with all this, Nimisha decided to take back her passport from Mahdi and Nimisha gave an intoxicating injection to Mahdi. Nimisha just wanted to make him unconscious, but Mahdi died due to overdose.
One year later, the court found Nimisha Priya guilty in this case and sentenced her to death. Nimisha’s mother Prema Kumari also challenged the lower court’s decision in the Supreme Court, but her petition was rejected. After this, Priya’s family was left with the option of blood money and appeal to the President as the last option. An attempt was made to negotiate blood money with the victim’s family, a lot of discussion took place on this issue, but it could not be successful. In this connection, Prema Kumari had also gone to Yemen this year. Yesterday Yemen’s President Rashad Al Alimi approved the death sentence of Nimisha and she can be hanged in a month.
