Following the recent terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir’s tourism industry has suffered a significant blow, with hotels and houseboats now lying vacant. The impact has extended beyond the region, affecting nearby areas as well, particularly the union territory of Ladakh. Emphasising the situation, Rattan Dhillon, a regular traveller to Ladakh, posted a video capturing the usually lively streets of Leh now deserted.
While sharing the video on X (formerly Twitter), Dhillon expressed his disbelief over the situation, saying, “Hard to believe this is Ladakh in June, right in the middle of peak season.” He mentioned that, over a decade of visiting Leh, he had never seen it so empty and devoid of tourists. “Looks like the Pahalgam incident has had a huge impact! Hoping things bounce back here soon!” he added in his post.
Hard to believe this is Ladakh in June right in the middle of peak season. I’ve been visiting Leh for the past 10 years and have never seen the town this quiet and deserted, with so few tourists around.

Posted on June 11, Dhillon’s video has garnered more than 37,000 views, along with over 300 likes and numerous comments. His remarks struck a chord with many viewers.
A user responded, “Sad to see this… this town lives on income from tourists.”
Another echoed the concern, saying, “Totally unexpected for peak season! Hoping things bounce back soon… Leh’s magic deserves to be alive again!”
Sharing his own experience, an individual commented, “I had visited in May right after the incident. Hardly any tourists around. Local tourism is badly affected by this.”
Another user weighed in, citing multiple causes behind the drop in visitors: “It’s been on the decline. According to me, multiple factors—super expensive taxis and flights, distance, bad roads, altitude, and health issues, coupled with bad health care support. But people like me have explored every corner of this beautiful landscape.”
The aftermath of the Pahalgam terror attack triggered a wave of cancellations, with tourists cutting their trips short and confirmed bookings being withdrawn. Interest in visiting Kashmir has sharply declined since then. This is particularly significant because, during the summer, the region typically attracts lakhs of tourists daily, many of whom explore nearby valleys and scenic locations on horseback. However, in the wake of the attack, tourism in the area has nearly come to a halt.
